TSC Round 3 Shootout at Rafter S MX

We are heading out to Malakoff for the TSC Round 3 Shootout at Rafter S MX. This is the big one where all three regions finally meet up in the same place. It is a bit of a haul if you are coming from the west side of the state, but the facility makes it worth the drive. The property is huge and the crew has put a lot of work into the infrastructure lately. Since it is a three-day deal over Labor Day weekend, you really get to settle in and get used to the dirt before the gate drops for real.
The dirt at Rafter S is a mix that keeps you on your toes. It is mostly sandy on top, especially in the corners where it builds up some deep berms and ruts. You have to watch out for the harder base underneath as the day goes on, because it can get slick in the high traffic spots. The layout uses the natural hills really well. You are going to see some big elevation changes and technical rhythm sections that reward riders who stay smooth. It is not just about pinning it. You have to actually think about where you are putting your wheels.
If Kyle Swanson was out here putting us through a clinic, he would probably be hammering on corner entry and picking the right lines through the sand sections. Since this is the Shootout and the track is going to get beat up with everyone there, your line choice on the second and third motos is what makes the difference. He would have us focusing on keeping the momentum up through those soft ruts so we are not bogging down or losing the front end. It is about being aggressive while staying smart with your energy.
This is a race for anybody who wants to see where they actually stack up against the fastest kids in the state. With double points on the line, you know everyone is showing up with their best stuff. Make sure you bring plenty of water and some extra air filters, because it is going to be hot and the sand will find its way into everything. The crew at Rafter S always keeps the track prepped right and the atmosphere is usually pretty hyped. It is a long weekend of racing, so get your bike ready and show up prepared for a battle.
